#WCW: Alexis Glenn

We wanted to kick off "WRITEher Crush Wednesday" with a female that we relate to and admire... Someone whose work ethic and drive motivates us and keeps us inspired.

Meet Alexis Glenn...

a country-bred singer-songwriter who isn't afraid to be herself.

Her eclectic sound accompanied by her sophisticated lyrics and graceful presence, reflects elements of various genres, including soul, R&B, jazz, funk, hip-hop and pop.

Through her debut mixtape, "Irrational Illustrations at Heart," Alexis introduces herself as well as illustrates her passions, fears, vengeance and regrets.

On her follow-up EP "Type of Girl," Alexis explores the depths of her feelings and relationships and discovers her identity and desires.

We had a chance to catch up with Alexis and chat about what it's like to be a female artist in the music industry.

Who is Alexis Glenn?

AG: Singer. Songwriter. Southerner. Survivor. Fighter. Shit-Talker. Over-Thinker. Dreamer.

Explain your creative process. What inspires you?

AG: My creative process is very organic. It's all emotional. Most of my songs stem from personal experience, some from fantasy. As I'm writing, I'm already visualizing the story in my head. I come up with the content, the words, the vocal arrangements and also the visuals. During this process, I can tap into the best version of myself as well as the most vulnerable.

Since I live inside of my head, my thoughts are all over the place. Writing always centers everything for me. It teaches me about myself. It's my meditation and affirmation. Writing gives me my power back.

Who is your biggest female musical influence, and what has she taught you?

AG: Teena Marie. She has shown me that I need to start producing my own music. It's difficult to translate exactly what you envision in your head when you can't produce your own music.

What is the best part of being a woman?

AG: The power! We can accomplish anything a man can, but we have magic. We have intuition.

What female artists are you listening to right now?

AG: Solange and Jorja Smith.

What obstacles do you face as a female artist? What advice would you give other female artists?

AG: Ulterior motives and validation. Often times, a female artist has to be cosigned and represented by a man in order to be taken seriously.

Female artists just have to stay focused and know that they have to work twice as hard.

Speaking of ulterior motives, what is your definition of a FUCK BOY? What is the craziest thing you have ever done to a FUCK BOY?

AG: A FUCK BOY is someone who uses you but doesn't help you progress... Someone who isn't genuine.

The craziest thing I've ever done to a FUCK BOY is cut the soles of all his shoes so that eventually they'll be ruined without him ever knowing what happened.

How do you balance music with work and your relationship?

AG: It's impossible to balance. A lot is often neglected. I want to get to a space where I'm able to spend less time working and more time executing my goals.

What has been your motto for 2016?

AG: My last year dreaming!
